The Art Group meets on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 1pm at the Christchurch Art Gallery. At its first meeting 21 members attended an excellent exhibition of lino cuts: '9 O'Clock Jump: British Linocuts from the Jazz Age.' Since then we have seen exhibitions and artworks created by Shona Rapira, Francis Shurrock, Yona Lee and Llew Summers' sculptures. We usually have about 20 members attending and we are very fortunate to have such an informed guide whom the group has all warmed to. Francis Shurrock known as Shurrie was particularly interesting because of his lecturing and some of the Canterbury artists he advised like Rita Angus. At our September meeting, we went to the Christchurch Art Gallery's library where Tim Jones the gallery's archivist explained the value and uses of the library. While it doesn't contain any artworks (they are stored elsewhere), the library is the repository for rare books, papers, documents, some sketches and information about NZ artists. Our usual guide Gail was with us and as always, was extremely helpful. The library is on the first floor and anyone interested can make an appointment to go there.
